As we are a specialist London Block Management Company, we wanted to provide insight into one of our main geographical areas of property management, Clerkenwell.
Clerkenwell gets its name from the Clerk’s Well at Farringdon Lane. Around the 1100’s a nunnery and priory was founded on the farmland and the sisters from the convent would use this well to collect water, which was also the area in which City students would perform an annual miracle play based on biblical themes.
Clerkenwell has always attracted various trades like jewellery, bookbinding, printing, clock making with some trades still active in the area to this day. A number of businesses owned factories in the area and with their expansion needs leading them to larger sites further afield, we now see a large number of loft style apartments having been converted from these factories.
As well as these loft style apartments we see today, Clerkenwell’s property type remains predominantly Georgian with the emergence of larger, purpose built developments, such as Brewhouse Yard bringing a modern feel to the area.
Clerkenwell does have a darker side however. Clerkenwell has an underground prison, fondly known as The House of Detention, built in 1818 and was located on Bowling Green Lane before being demolished in 1890. The site is now occupied by Hugh Myddleton School building, converted into 42 flats by Persimmon Homes in 1999.
As well as these loft style apartments we see today, Clerkenwell’s property type remains predominantly Georgian with the emergence of larger, purpose built developments, such as Brewhouse Yard bringing a modern feel to the area.
Clerkenwell does have a darker side however. Clerkenwell has an underground prison, fondly known as The House of Detention, built in 1818 and was located on Bowling Green Lane before being demolished in 1890. The site is now occupied by Hugh Myddleton School building, converted into 42 flats by Persimmon Homes in 1999.
During 2014, archaeologists also discovered a mass burial site from the Black Death at Charterhouse Square. The site was being dug in connection with the Crossrail project with over 25 skeletons being unearthed. It is suspected that there was previously a Carthusian monastery in the area during the 1400’s where people could go to pray for victims of the plague.
