The London Borough of Camden stretches from Holborn and Chancery Lane in Central London, all the way north to Hampstead amounting to 8.4 square miles.
Camden, named after the Charles Pratt the first Earl of Camden who was an English lawyer and judge who died in 1794.
Prior to the late 1700’s, the area we know today as Camden was mainly fields and farms with most of the dense population located towards Holborn with the area loosely being London’s legal quarter from the 14th Century onwards.
The first terminal was built at Euston in 1837 which meant that the borough of Camden expanded rapidly with a large number of Irish settlers arriving. By 1850 Camden was officially a hub for shopping and entertainment with a number of buildings still in operation to this day.
The London Borough of Camden has always held an attraction for the talented and creative with significant residents such as George Orwell, Charles Dickens and of course the late Amy Winehouse.
Camden, as well as its eclectic community known for its edgy undertones, has a wide variety of property from converted Georgian terraces to impressive Victorian houses. As mentioned above, a number of buildings have survived throughout the years and are still in use to this day for example, The Worlds End Pub (formerly the Mother Red Cap) which dates back to 1690.
The Borough of Camden is famous for its markets. With Camden Lock being one of the larger locks allowing produce to be moved from the midlands down towards the London docks. By the 1950’s the road traffic dissolved the use of the canals for commercial use and therefore the buildings along the canal fell into abandonment. By 1972 the markets had been sub-let to workshops and craft stores leading to the modern day stalls ranging from traditional crafts, antiques, clothing and food stalls.
